Objective of the Programme
To provide safe and reliable specialized transportation to and from school, medical appointments and therapy for children who are mentally or physically challenged.
How the Programme Works
There are currently five Sunshine Coaches in Barbados, each seating 19-26 children, including those requiring wheelchair access. The vehicles are purchased by Variety and entrusted to schools and organisations catering to special needs children. Variety heavily subsidizes the maintenance of the vehicles.
- As of 2014 the fleet is over ten years old and needs to be replaced. Replacement costs are $225,000 per vehicle.
- The coaches travel the length and breadth of Barbados, taking about 80 children to school on a regular basis and assisting several hundred more in various ways.
- The Vehicles are operated by The Sunshine Early Stimulation Centre; Ursuline Convent, Thelma Vaughn Memorial Home, Challenor Creative Arts and Training Centre and Variety office.
One vehicle was purchased by the Maria Holder Memorial Trust while the Sandy Lane Trusts have for many years sponsored the programme.
